NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE

What is the National Youth Leadership Training Conference?

The National Youth Leadership Training Conference (NYLT) is a seven day, outdoor training experience for Boy Scout and Venturing youth leaders. The course design and content has been developed by the National BSA Council and is offered by your local council as the next step in building the Scout's leadership skills after the Troop Leader Training provided by the Scoutmaster or the Introduction to Leadership Skills Course provided by the Venturing Advisor.

What is the purpose of National Youth Leadership Training?

Scouts at the NYLT conference learn the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. The course schedule parallels the program month of the Unit. Three model group meetings, a team leaders' council meeting in the round followed by daily TLC operating sessions, an instructional campfire, and unit operation using the patrol method create a productive unit program. Important leadership skills such as communication, developing goals, planning, and making ethical decisions are all part of the program.

 How to apply?

Boy Scout applicants must be of First Class rank, 13 years old by August 1. Venturing Scouts must be 14 years old by August 1 and have taken the Introduction to Leadership Skills Course.  All must have their Unit Leader's recommendation.  The Scoutmaster/Venture Advisor may nominate up to eight candidates from their unit. They should be in a unit leadership position currently or expect to be in a leadership position within the next twelve months. The Scouts should also have some camping, hiking and cooking skills as the conference is conducted in a camp setting. After the Nomination is received, an application package will be sent to each candidate. The Scout and the Unit Leader will fill out the application package and return it to the Scout Center. Please discuss this program with your Scoutmaster/Advisor if you would like your Scout to attend.
